While looking through our crops this week we found that the new growth on some of our okra plants had gotten infested with aphids. Aphids can damage our crops by harming new plant tissue, stunting plant growth, and potentially introducing fungi or disease. In order to try and dampen the effects of this infestation, we began treatment right away and sprayed all affected plants with dilute neem oil. Thankfully, we also found a surprisingly high amount of ladybugs had joined our agro-ecosystem! Hopefully repeated application of neem oil and having beneficial insect populations will be enough to minimize damage to our crops by aphids.
